Repeatedly, the media picks up some exciting news related to a very small scale study that promises to deliver the much desired anti-malarial vaccine that will be available within three to five years.
Until this truly happens we should exercise caution and a healthy skepticism.
The Malaria Vaccine Technology Roadmap has been developed. The roadmap charts a path towards the following goals:
- By 2015, to develop and license a first generation vaccine with 50% protective efficacy against severe disease and death lasting longer than 1 year.
- By 2025, to develop a malaria vaccine that has the efficacy of >80% against clinical disease and provides protection for longer than 4 year.
A recent review published by Australian researchers in the Trends in Parasitology highlighted the tremendous challenge faced by malaria vaccine researchers and developers.
